Advancements in medical techniques and technology have increased the survival rates of critically wounded combat personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan to unprecedented levels. These servicemen and women, should they survive their injuries, are far too often left with chronic pain that forces them to rely on dangerously addictive medications like Opiates. An even greater number of Veterans will cope with PTSD, symptoms of which are often aggravated by commonly prescribed medications such as benzodiazepines and anti-depressants that often lead to suicidal thoughts and urges. In 2012, 9 years after the President of the United States declared “Mission Accomplished” on the flight deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln, the rate of suicide amongst Veterans doubled the national average.
These very same Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines, maimed on the battlefield, risk losing their federal benefits for either being legally prescribed Cannabis by Doctors in states that have passed Medicinal Marijuana legislation or choosing to self-medicate themselves with it in states that haven’t. The real travesty in all of this is that the bravest men and women amongst us, those who took a solemn oath to defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies and obey the orders of those appointed over them, are being treated like criminals by the very government that sent them into harm’s way. Too many of our brother’s and sister’s in arms have lost their lives. We at Vets for Cannabis believe our surviving warriors deserve the right to compassionate care and non-addictive pain relief without fear of retribution by the federal government.
The goal of Vets for cannabis is to allow Florida Residents the right to access Cannabis for medicinal purposes by Voting Yes on Amendment 2 on November 4th, 2014. Please click on the link above to find out how to register to vote and assistance in requesting an absentee ballot. Vets for Cannabis would also like to see PTSD added by the Department of Health as a qualifying disorder. Once Veterans have access to medicinal Cannabis in Florida, we will make it our charge to fight Veteran’s access to medicinal Cannabis free of retribution by the U.S. Court System, The Department of Veteran’s Affairs or any Federal Law Enforcement Agency.
Jack Steigelman was driven to start Vets for Cannabis from my own experiences with Combat and returning home a “Disabled Veteran”. As a Disabled Veteran I was pushed through the system upon returning home and felt anger and abandonment. I not only saw in the change in my battle buddies but felt the dark side of PTSD first hand and how it affected my family. Vets for Cannabis pledges to work with only the most compassionate and accommodating Doctors in Florida to provide optimal care. We also certify every dispensary we partner with to ensure quality and consistency of the medicine.
To bring relief to the men and women who have served our nation through a comprehensive medical marijuana program.
